Relations between Morocco and Mauritania will be further consolidated, according to a Mauritanian association

«Mohamed Ould El-Ghazaouani’s visit to Morocco will give new impetus to cooperation between the two countries» and consolidate a decisive step in the strategic partnership between the two neighboring nations, said Cheikhani Ould Cheikh, president of the Mauritania-Moroccan Association for the Defense of the Maghreb, in a statement for Le360.

The president of the association did not fail to recall the human significance of this meeting, insisting on the fact that King Mohammed VI, despite his period of convalescence, had insisted on receiving his Mauritanian guest. “We were touched by this meeting, especially since the King, even during his convalescence, received his Mauritanian guest. We were pleased to note that he was in very good health.», welcomed the president of the association.

Historical heritage and deep cultural ties

The president of the association, who is making a three-day working visit to Morocco, insisted on the importance of promoting “deep-rooted and centuries-old relationships» between Mauritania and Morocco, which are based on a common history, cultural exchanges and economic interdependence which has been built over the centuries.

He stressed that numerous testimonies and documents in his country attest to this historical relationship: “These documents are found in the Ksar of Moulay Abdellah in Tidjikja, a place founded in 1660. Among them, a letter from Sultan Moulay Ismaïl as well as works offered, notably to the religious scholar Sidi Abdellah Ould Hadj Brahim Alaoui during his visit to Morocco under the reign of Sultan Sidi Mohammed I.»

This cultural and religious heritage illustrates the antiquity of the spiritual ties between the two countries. He also mentioned the central role of the Tijani current in these relations: “The Salafist current of Tijania, adopted by many Mauritanian communities, benefited from particular interest on the part of Sultan Moulay Souleimane, testifying to the depth of religious and intellectual exchanges between our peoples.»

Cheikhani Ould Cheikh underlined the “major role played by land routes linking Morocco and Mauritania» in bringing populations together and developing trade. These routes have made it possible to forge strong links between the two countries over the centuries.
