West Africa’s imports of dairy products amount to 2.14 billion euros (more than 1,401 billion FCfa) in 2020, or around 3% of global imports of dairy products, according to the review “Rural Economy” published in December 2023. This document, produced by researcher Djiby Dia from the Senegalese Institute of Agricultural Research and other French experts, is entitled: “The rise of trade of milk powders re-fattened with palm oil: The case of European exports to West Africa”. According to this survey, the European Union is by far the leading supplier of dairy products to West Africa, with 69% of its imports in 2020, compared to 60% in 2010. The four main EU client countries in West Africa are Nigeria (32% of total dairy product exports in 2020), Senegal (20%), Ivory Coast (10%) and Mali (7%) », underlines the magazine.
Regarding milk powders linked to vegetable fats (Mgv), Senegal is in the lead regarding the financial value of EU exports. In 2021, Brussels earned 223 million euros, or more than 145 billion FCfa in Senegal. This represents 75% of the country’s milk needs. Nigeria occupies second place, with more than 142 billion FCFA, or 46% of its dairy needs, while Ivory Coast completes the podium with 47.6 billion FCFA, or 49% of dairy products. In sum, the EU obtained an amount of 781 million euros, or nearly 510 billion FCfa in West Africa, just by exporting Mvg milk powders, during the year 2021.
In addition, West Africa represents 36% of European exports of Mvg milk powders in 2021. “ Senegal and Nigeria occupy first place among importing countries, each with 28% of total European Mgv powders imported to West Africa in 2021 », Mention the researchers. Contacted, the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (Ansd) specifies that in 2022, the availability of milk was 573.8 million liters, of which 50% came from local production and 50% from imports. However, the Ansd notes that imports of milk and dairy products increased from 178.3 million in 2021 to 285.9 million liters in 2022, an increase of 60% in relative value and 107.6 million in liters in absolute value. “ This situation is explained by a 66% increase in powdered milk. Per capita consumption is 37.05 liters/person », Indicates the Ansd, which reports that 95% of powdered milk comes from the EU.
