A poll conducted for a progressive organization indicates that former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo enjoys a comfortable lead among Democrats in the election for mayor of New York, which will take place next November . Cuomo, it should be remembered, had to resign from his post as governor in August 2021 after the publication of an investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James accusing him of having sexually harassed at least 11 women. He has not confirmed his intention to run for mayor of America’s largest city, but the idea would interest him.
Cuomo’s lead in this poll is largely due to the fact that he is well known in New York, unlike the contenders already in the running, and to the unpopularity of the current mayor, Eric Adams, who is notably the subject of an indictment for corruption. Cuomo received 32% of voting intentions compared to 10% for former municipal comptroller Scott Stringer, 8% for his successor Brad Lander, 7% for state senator Jessica Ramos and 6% for Adams and Assemblyman D Zohran Mamdani State.
The New York mayoral campaign will take place in a context unfavorable to the Democrats. Even if the city is dark blue, it might be interested in the candidacy of a Republican or independent candidate who calls into question the results of “Democratic governance”, which are not very good in large American cities, including including New York.
Cuomo, who has never been popular among progressives, could stand out from most Democratic contenders by trying to advance his centrist or more conservative policies. But aren’t the accusations of sexual harassment against him disqualifying? The question remains unanswered for the moment.
