After several decades spent among the least developed countries, Senegal is preparing to change its economic status. Indeed, on December 19, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly took a historic decision by validating the withdrawal of Senegal from the category of least developed countries (LDC). This resolution grants the country a transitional period of five years to complete this exit.
This event is seen as a significant sign of the progress made by Senegal in terms of development. According to the UN, this withdrawal demonstrates the notable progress made by the country, particularly in terms of economic and social development.
During this 5-year transition period, Senegal will have to define a national strategy in consultation with United Nations institutions and its development partners, whether bilateral, regional or multilateral. The UN stresses that this transition must occur without disrupting ongoing development programs, taking into account current challenges such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, which continue to affect food security and energy as well as market stability.
-This progress is not unique to Senegal: Cambodia also benefits from this decision and will benefit from a similar transition. Furthermore, several African countries, such as Botswana, Cape Verde and Equatorial Guinea, have already made this transition, demonstrating the progress made on the continent in terms of development.
