Concretely, from January 1, 2025, all Federal and Walloon Deputies Engaged who are members of a municipal college will give up their salary as Mayor or Alderman or President of CPAS and will retain that of parliamentarian.
Legally, local elected officials cannot renounce receiving their salary, they will therefore continue to receive it but they will transfer it (less the amounts intended to cover the related taxes) either to the CPAS of their municipality, or directly to local or national associations of their choice, or to the National Movement which will then donate it to social, environmental or philanthropic associations.
In the province of Liège, only one mayor is concerned: Jean-Paul Bastin. Questioned by our colleagues from L’Avenir, the mayor of Malmedy made no secret of his intentions. “The associative sector is rich in the region. I will initially give my remuneration each month to a different association. I do not yet have a complete list but associations like People’s Place (formerly Couleur Café) which promote integration, neighborhood life, the fight against isolation, interculturality… or an association which fights against drug addiction as well as an environmental protection association I could also give to the CPAS.”
