This Tuesday, December 17, an awareness mission led by workers from the National Oilseed Marketing Company of Senegal (SONACOS) took place in Kolda. Objective: to encourage producers and operators to avoid selling off peanuts on weekly markets and to favor official collection points.
During this mission, the coordinator of SONACOS staff delegates, spokesperson for the initiative, invited producers to sell their crops through official channels. This measure aims to guarantee the delivery of seeds to factories for optimal processing. According to Mamadou Faye, “the sale of harvests goes against the State’s efforts to achieve food sovereignty”.
To reassure producers, Mamadou Faye explained that solid financial arrangements have been put in place to avoid delays or unpaid payments. “An amount of 3 billion CFA francs was released and made available to operators to purchase peanut seeds directly,” he underlined. Furthermore, he specifies, SONACOS factories have received strict instructions so that any arriving truck must be unloaded within 48 hours, and payments must be made within the same period of time.
This year, SONACOS has set itself a goal of collecting 300,000 tonnes of peanuts throughout the national territory. Exemplary mobilization of producers and operators will be essential to achieve this target.
By strengthening this partnership with local producers, SONACOS hopes not only to improve the conditions for selling crops, but also to support the national strategy aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and guaranteeing food security in Senegal.
