Revelations on what is blocking the formalization of Pape Thiaw

The Senegalese Federation has decided to entrust the management of the national team to Pape Thiaw. The next step is to finalize the contract of the new coach.

A week ago Pape Thiaw was unanimously chosen to take the reins of the national selection after the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Federation. Although Augustin Senghor discussed the matter with the Minister of Sports, Khady Diène Gaye, no official correspondence was sent to the authority, despite telephone exchanges, according to The Echoes. In the absence of written documents, the administration is struggling to formalize this decision.

Discussions continue behind the scenes, but remain unofficial for now, according to reports from The Echoes. As for Pape Thiaw, if his appointment is confirmed, he will have important missions to accomplish. The Echoes quotes Nalla Fall, technical advisor to the Minister of Sports, who recently announced that one of Thiaw’s first objectives would be to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. However, before that, he will have to qualify the national team for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

If Senegal were to fail in these qualifications, questions remain about the future of Pape Thiaw. The Echoes raises the question of whether the authorities would still trust him to aim for the Continental Trophy or whether he would be dismissed from his functions. Thiaw’s contract of less than two years adds an additional dimension to this reflection. The dismissal of Aliou Cissé could indeed serve as a precedent in this story of objectives to be achieved.
