a 20th day rich in cultural festivities, activities and parades

December 20 celebrates the abolition of slavery in Island in 1848. In Saint-Paul, this event is marked by rich and varied cultural festivities, including maloya concerts, historical exhibitions, parades and workshops. Many places in the city are transformed into sharing spaces with Creole stands, traditional activities and shows that highlight Reunion’s heritage. This memorial day is an opportunity to discover local history, particularly through conferences and screenings.

An unmissable event to celebrate Reunion culture and identity in a friendly and festive atmosphere.

– The party in the neighborhoods –

From Étang Saint-Paul, to Bellemène, -de-Nèfles, Carosse or even La Saline, the celebrations arrive in the neighborhoods of Saint-Paul.

– At the Bois-de-Nèfles bowling alley

This Friday from 2:30 p.m., there will be a parade from the bowling alley towards rue de l’Église, returning via rue Évariste de Parny.

From 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., a Kreol village hosted by Gilles Malet will be set up. Welcome with the Grand Pat’ association (stilts), the Tambour Réunion association and the Moringueurs de l’Ouest. Tasting of heated rice, lontan juice and lontan cakes.

But also, exhibition, maloya party mix, introduction to moringue and drummers. Goni race and wheel race and finally, blood sausage eating competition.

From 5 p.m. to midnight, concert with show. Club vive la joie, reading zistoir lontan, Tikok Vellaye, Fankassim, Wendy, Pan, Vibration Moulin Maïs, Mégazik, Patrick Gado, Étincelle Maloya, Kouleur mon nasyon and Héritage maloya.

– At the Bellemène bowling alley

From 9 a.m., start of the football tournament.

From 9:30 a.m., ox cart parade accompanied by drums (departure from the church parking lot)

From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. – tasting of Creole specialties, introduction to maloya, musical shaker making workshop, traditional lontan games and blood sausage eating competition.

From 2 p.m. to 1 a.m., concerts are planned with Racine Melody, Bof and Co, Ban makwalé, sens unik, ASCF, Séga El and Kaf Malbar.

From 9 a.m. Start of the football tournament. Open stage, exhibition, handmade, long objects, tasting, sale of cakes and drinks.

From 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. Several concerts organized. From 2 p.m.: opening of stands, lontan games, tasting, cakes, lontan roots and juice, heated rice, fond ker and writing workshop, open stage.

5 p.m. – beef cart parade

From 4pm to 1pm – Spark of the curse, Famy Gado, Fombé of the curse, Heritaz of the curse, Akisasa, El Diablo, Sector 410 and Destina of the curse.

From this Wednesday, December 18, the exhibition “Maroon slavery, characters”, presents the history of the maroons of western Reunion.
