upward poverty rate and territorial inequalities

The Observatory of Inequalities, an organization of reflection on societal issues, publishes a report on poverty every two years. The 2024 report was published on December 3, from the 2022 data of INSEE. The poverty line is less than half of the median standard of living of the French, whatever the cost of living but including social benefits: € 1,000 for a single person, € 2,500 for a couple with two children . In the departments, the observatory gives the figures of the municipalities of more than 2,000 inhabitants only. In the English Channel, this poverty rate increased significantly, from 11.2 % in 2020 to 11.7 % in 2022.

Upward cities

Between the 1920s and 2022, Périers was stable (poverty rate of 20 %) but remains at the top of the “poor cities”. Saint-Lô goes to 2e Position (19 %, + 2 points) and is ahead of Coutances (19 %, + 1 point). Two cities which have the distinction of having high social housing rates of 37 % and 35 %. Just like Cherbourg, but whose poverty rate is similar to Granville and Avranches (14 %).

Precariousness in the South Manche

The striking fact is a group shot of small towns in the South Manche, of the 4e at 8e Place of the classification: Villedieu (18 %), Sourdeval (17 %, + 3 points), Mortain (16 %, + 2 points), Percy-en-Normandie (16 %, + 1 point) and Saint-Hilaire-du- Harcouët (15 %, + 1 point). The cities of the marshes are a little better subtitled this year ( – 1 point in Lessay and Picauville), just like Carentan (14 %, – 1 point), which goes from the 5the at the 15the place.

It's better to …

At the bottom of this ranking, where the poverty rate is less than 10 %, we find the west coast (Gouville, Donville and Saint-Pair-sur-Mer), the retro coast (Bréhal, Sartilly, Ducey), the living cities nuclear (the piles and the haague) and finally some municipalities of the Saint-Loise crown: lambs, village, Saint-Amand and Condé-sur-Vire, which closes the march with a rate of 6 %
