As the strike continues at Canada Post, approximately 185,000 passports are waiting to be issued to their holders, according to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), the department that manages Service Canada.
The majority of “ready to send” passports can be picked up in person at a Service Canada office, but those already in the postal system will not be able to be picked up until after the strike, according to an update from ESDC.
About to enter its fourth week, the Canada Post workers’ strike is causing headaches for travelers, many of whom will not be able to go on vacation or see loved ones as the holidays approach, reports the Toronto Star in an article.
This is the case of a Canadian traveler, Shreya Kamble, who told the newspaper, after her plane left without her:
“It’s not just a piece of paper or a package delivered late. I’m losing an opportunity to reconnect with the people in my life, the people who mean the most to me. »
Her passport, which was placed in the postal system before the strike, is now stuck in a Canada Post office in Toronto, where she cannot access due to the work stoppage.
Since November 8, approximately 185,000 passports ready to be mailed have been held by Service Canada, according to ESDC.
People whose passports were held before mailing can request to collect them in person, ESDC added.
To do this, they must contact the federal passport program or go to a Service Canada office.
The department said that to date, “approximately 6,500 passports have been requested to be transferred and collected at a Service Canada office.”
A spokesperson for the federal Minister of Citizens’ Services told the Toronto Star that there should not be many Canadian passports stuck in the postal system, since authorities began holding passports “a week before the shutdown work”.
People who have not received their passport can contact Service Canada to resolve the situation.
