Worrying situation in Perpignan prison center. Tuesday November 26, 2024, a search targeting four cells of the men's remand center (MAH) made it possible to get their hands on a slew ofprohibited items in detention. A bladed weapon was even discovered.

A ceramic knife found in a cell

The operation mobilized student guards, detention supervisors, the local prison security team (ELSP), the dog brigade and the regional intervention and security team (ERIS) of , details the UFAP UNSa Justice.

By searching only four cells, the agents found cannabis resin (55 g), four ready-to-use joints, a grinder, around fifty “white tablets marked with a V”.

They also seized various devices: an electronic cigarette (and its liquid), an electronic shisha, three pairs of wireless headphones, an Amazon remote control, 10 USB cables, 7 phone chargers, a Wi-Fi key and a key , a jack socket.

Even more worrying, 11 cell phonesfour SIM cards and one ceramic knife were discovered among the personal effects of the detained detainees.

“These objects seriously compromise security”

“These discoveries show the massive presence of prohibited objects in cells, despite current control systems. The seizure of 11 mobile phones in only four cells proves a massive circulation of these devices,” complains the prison union.

Their illegal use has long been denounced by the UFAP UNSa Justice because it contributes to numerous tragedies, such as that of Incarville (A particularly closely monitored detainee, Mohamed Amra, was able to escape thanks to the intervention of several hooded men and heavily armed. Two prison officers died during the attack. Three others were seriously injured, editor's note). These objects seriously compromise security in establishments.

The discovery of the ceramic knife is all the more worrying as this material is difficult to detect by standard equipment. “It’s a wake-up call. This type of weapon increases the risk of a serious incident involving staff and external responders,” warns UFAP UNSa Justice.

The union wants a full search of the prison

For the union, these worrying findings demonstrate that “current means are no longer enough”. He calls for a review of search policies and a strengthening of security measures, “essential to prevent a tragedy”.

The UFAP UNSa Justice also requests a complete search of the establishmentor at a minimum, an exhaustive search per sector. “Out of the 108 cells of the Men's Prison, the number of objects seized could be multiplied alarmingly,” concludes the union, which calls on the agents to meet in front of the prison doors on Thursday, December 5.
