(Ecofin Agency) – Recent accidents in health structures in Senegal have reignited the debate on the quality of health personnel in the country. The government initiated an audit to shed light on the situation, and discovered that 63 training schools in the field were operating without authorization.
According to the results of an audit carried out by the Senegalese Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, 63 health sciences training schools operating in the country do not have authorization.
The document published Thursday, November 19 indicates that of the 136 public and private EFSSs listed in the country, only 73 are legally authorized to practice. A worrying statistic in a context where the quality of training of Senegalese health personnel is debated.
“Following the tragic events noted at the level of certain health structures in the country, with loss of human life exposing the dysfunction of our health system, there was a greater need to stop and question the system, particularly in its Human Resources component” said Minister Abdourahmane Diouf during the report presentation ceremony.
In addition to discrediting staff diplomas, this state of affairs does not allow training programs to be aligned with the real needs of the health system. For the minister, this report will be used to initiate reforms on teaching and learning procedures as well as training processes.
“The recommendations formulated will serve as a pretext for the various ministries and stakeholders concerned to rethink and reform the health sciences training ecosystem, with a view to making it more efficient and better adapted to changes in professions and to the needs and expectations of populations. » he concluded.
