Nogent-sur-Oise. Auchan plans to reduce its retail space by a third

Employees demonstrated in March 2024, following the national movement. They had entered the establishment with banners and flags. Eight months later, four positions should be eliminated in Nogent as well as… 4000 M2 of surface area. (Photo Archives: obs-oh)

The Auchan group is once again making headlines, but this time more in the Nogent-sur-Oise sector.

The brand owned by the Mulliez Family Association (AFM), owner in particular of Decathlon, Leroy-Merlin, Kiabi and Boulanger, seems to be reviewing its copy on the Nogent site.

With an announced plan to cut jobs on a national scale (the brand should eliminate 14 positions in Oise, four in , five in Méru and five in Nogent-sur-Oise), is now added all the less for the large surface area of Nogent-sur-Oise, a substantial reduction in the store surface area.

It is true that the site currently has between 10 and 12,000 m2, which makes it one of the largest in the sector. It is located in a historic commercial area of Mammouth (for the oldest and when the commercial area of Saint-Maximin did not yet exist)

Today, the hypermarket model is facing the crisis head-on and must review its copy, reducing its surface area. The bazaar and sale of household appliances section should be impacted.

The announcement of the closure of nearly 4,000 square meters of space tends to position the unions once again on the defensive.

Certainly, nearly 8,000 m² of sales space is still maintained “but the question will be how these closed 4,000 m² will be occupied,” underlines a regular.

“If it is to install another sign there, it could be a vacuum cleaner for the general public. But we realize that the shopping mall is not completely occupied. We all know that the rents charged are high and the brands are having difficulty taking the plunge,” explains a merchant from the gallery.

For example, there is Flunch which closed its doors and was taken over a few months ago by another brand, which itself closed the curtain.

Paradoxically, the commercial area has developed with a multitude of brands on the outskirts of Auchan. Bakers, Action, Aldi, and so many others.

Some see direct access from RD 1016 as a complexity of access. Many see this ramp as a division of the commercial zone between the North and the South. The Auchan's multi-storey car park makes parking easier. However, it is the cause of nocturnal nuisance since smart people come and squeal the tires until midnight in the middle of the night. But that's another problem.

On the Auchan management side, we are not commenting in more detail, regretting in passing that this announcement was “leaked”. The staff just fear for their future and make it known.
