Mountains and glaciers will be at the heart of discussions on Thursday November 21, 2024. The Minister of Ecological TransitionEnergy, Climate and Risk Prevention Agnès Pannier-Runacher go to Haute-Savoie, and more precisely in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc to discuss climate change which impacts mountain ranges.

“It’s a scientific fact: climate change is almost twice as significant in the Alps as globally. In the Alps and Pyrenees in , the temperature increased by + 2°C during the 20th century, compared to + 1.4°C in the rest of France […] New ecosystems, likely to shelter new biodiversity, are emerging from the melting of glaciers and need to be protected. », Explains the Haute-Savoie prefecture, which organizes the trip, in a press release.

A round table with scientists planned

During her visit to the department, the minister will present “announce a new plan for the prevention of glacial and periglacial risks, measures to protect glaciers and post-glacial ecosystems, as well as a strengthening of State support for mountainous territories , particularly within the framework of the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change”.

Concretely, the minister will participate in a table ronde with elected officials, scientists and state services around the issue of melting glaciers and the future of the Mountain at 11 a.m., before participating in a videoconference with the ambassador in the afternoon Climate and the French delegation present at Baku for a follow-up point of the ongoing discussions and negotiations at COP29.
