Several roads were immediately blocked, taking time to clear this busy route linking Dieppe and Le Havre. By decision of the mayor, the municipal reserve was mobilized to secure the perimeter.
On the ground floor of the building, you can no longer guess anything about the kebab. The facade of the building was completely torn offrevealing the interior of the apartments. The residents of the first and second floor were able to be evacuated around 3:30 a.m.
“Fortunately, the rooms are located on the opposite side of the facade,” confides Thérèse, owner of one of the apartments, still upset. Uninjured, but shocked, the occupants were all taken care of, then relocated by the town hallconfirms Thierry Malandain, municipal councilor and local resident, on site.
No explosion, no noise
Around 10 a.m., the truck waited for the tow truck to arrive. Around fifteen people observe the rubble behind the markings.
Most residents discovered the damage in the morning, without hearing anything. Jean-Paul, newspaper under his arm, looks dully. It's his day off. The resident of Bertreville is heavy goods vehicle driver. He recognizes the vehicle. He also makes convoys for sugar.
It is certain that the deceased driver is probably a colleague on his way to Fontaine-le-Dun. “I must know him,” murmurs the sixty-year-old, who has taken up loading again to supplement his retirement, part-time. “He’s a guy who transports beets. We are in peak season. This road, we borrow it every day. » He heard the news of his death from other passers-by. “We say to ourselves that it could have been us,” he laments.
“Even the neighbors didn’t hear anything”
“Fortunately the truck was empty, if it had been full, it would have caused a lot more damage,” comments Julie, a local resident whose partner works in agriculture. “It’s sad,” she repeats, finding no other words.
The couple lives in the same line of buildings, around 150 meters further on, on rue du Général-de-Gaulle. “From the window, you don’t see it. » It was when Julie woke up that the electricity was out. His first instinct, with his partner, was to check social networks. “And that’s when we found out,” she is surprised. “Even the neighbors didn’t hear anything. »
For Fernande, the face-to-face meeting was direct. “It made me a huge shock to see that this morning,” she confides, leaning on her window sill. 86 years old, her house overlooks the rubble, ready to collapse. “Everything is dead. There's nothing left, it's sad », she is moved, referring to the crushed business and some of the residents rehoused.
Circumstances to be determined
THE reasons for the tragedy are not yet determined. “An examination of the body will be carried out in the coming days to determine if there was discomfort or other causes,” informs Ludovic Dantec, commander of the Fécamp gendarmerie company. Toxicological samples were also taken.
Certain restrictions at the crossroads were lifted in the morning, to allow the passage of trucks going to industrial sites.
Security work has started
An expert came around 4 p.m. to check the solidity of the building. After his intervention, a company requested by the town hall was able to start security workof the framework. The objective is to put wooden facades, in order to close the building. The installation will be completed overnight.
Electricity and gas remain cut off, they will be checked this Saturday by GDF. Once this verification has been completed, traffic can be fully reopened.
