This Thursday, Secours catholique unveiled its annual report concerning the state of poverty in France. The association, which met and helped more than a million people in need in 2023, is concerned about the seriousness of the situation.
The more the years pass, the more alarming the situation becomes. According to the latest report from Secours catholique concerning the state of poverty in France, the standard of living of the poorest has deteriorated again this year. In 2023, of the more than a million French people who have been helped by the association, 95% of them live below the poverty line. Even more serious, 74% are below the extreme poverty line.
In its report, Secours catholique notes that the median standard of living of people welcomed by the structure, in 2023, was 555 euros per month, compared to the 2,130 euros estimated for the remaining French people. “We have never encountered so many households living without any resources,” notes the association. In 2023, 25.4% of the households encountered are trying to survive thanks to the resourcefulness and support of those who are able to help them.
Women and those under 15 particularly affected
“Poverty continues to become more feminized,” the structure further warns. Indeed, according to the figures recorded, the first victims of poverty are indeed women, who represent 56.7% of people in need encountered in 2023. Female poverty, but also young: a third of them are under the age of 15.
As for the needs expressed to Secours catholique, 46% concerned food, 13% clothing, 17% rent and unpaid bills and 13% wanted help with administrative procedures.
