the Manche prefecture puts a stop to the extension project

New negative opinion in the case of the tomato greenhouses of Isigny-le-Buat (Manche). The company, controlled by Dutch investors, wanted to add another 20 ha to its current 12 ha. Enough to produce 8 to 13,000 additional tonnes of “Mont-Saint-Michel” tomatoes. For this, she had submitted a building permit on February 29, 2024.

On April 18, the Departmental Commission for the Preservation of Natural, Agricultural and Forestry Areas (CDPENAF) gave a negative opinion to the extension of greenhouses. An advisory opinion, pending that of the prefecture, which has just been issued, this Tuesday, November 12, 2024.

“Insufficient compensation measures”

Xavier Brunetière, prefect of Manche, made the decision not to grant environmental authorization. “The file examination phase identified gaps and inadequacies that did not allow a complete understanding of the impacts of different natures on the environment near and far from the planned site. In particular, the proposed compensation measures appear insufficient, the conditions for issuing an exemption from the appropriate protection of the protected species concerned are not met and all of the impacts on water resources are insufficiently assessed. he justifies in a press release.
