The November 11 commemorations took place in a particular context, marked by the return of war to Europe. The President of the Republic and the Prime Minister took the opportunity to convey a certain number of messages.
Emmanuel Macron, on one side, and Michel Barnier, on the other, were both at the heart of the November 11 commemorations. The President of the Republic was alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to lay a wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier and rekindle the flame of remembrance, a symbol of understanding between the two countries. “This year, the ceremony is placed under the theme of Franco-British friendship, as the 120th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale between France and the United Kingdom ends”specifies the Élysée.
For his part, Michel Barnier was in Meaux (Seine-et-Marne) at the Great War museum. He inaugurated a reconstruction of the trenches. “The promise of peace made in 1950 has been respected until today. We must take care of this Europe because it is both fragile and necessary”he declared. A Europe confronted with the war in Ukraine and the prospect of American commitments after the election of Donald Trump.
