heavy rainfall forecast in the Balearic Islands and on the Mediterranean coasts at the start of the week

The Spanish Meteorological Agency announces the arrival of a new mass of cold air which is expected to move from northern Europe to the southwest as of Tuesday, November 12.

After a few days of calm, new heavy rains are forecast in the Balearic Islands and on the Spanish Mediterranean coasts. In question? A new mass of cold air which is expected to move from northern Europe to the southwest in the coming days, announces the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet). It could reach the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands from Tuesday November 12 and until Saturday November 16.

“Heavy and persistent” rain

The agency announces a general drop in temperatures from Tuesday. “It is likely to isolate itself in the form of an isolated high-level Depression or cold squall in the Mediterranean or in the south of the Iberian Peninsula,” reports the institution.

Instability is therefore to be feared, and “heavy and persistent rain” is feared in the affected areas swept by this new cold air mass.

“Persistent rain is likely in areas of the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean slope, without excluding parts of the Cantabrian and central Spain,” supports the State Meteorological Agency.

“It is likely that persistent rains will occur in the Balearic Islands and on the Mediterranean slope, without excluding parts of Cantabria and central Spain.

The position of the depression, and therefore the distribution and quantity of precipitation, is, at this time, uncertain.

“The most likely scenario currently is that precipitation in the Mediterranean area will begin on Tuesday, with greater probability in the south of the Balearic archipelago, especially in the Pitiusas, without excluding other points on the Mediterranean coast” , estimates Aemet.

Up to 200 mm of water locally

The precipitation should, from Wednesday, extend to a large part of the Iberian Peninsula “in the form of snow in the mountains, although the heights will gradually increase. In the uncertainty, the episode is expected to be more intense and persistent in parts of the Balearic Islands”.

“It is expected to be more intense and persistent in the Balearic Islands and on the Mediterranean coast, especially north of Cape La Nao initially, and on the Mediterranean coast,” adds the agency.

The north of the Valencian Community and the coasts, pre-coasts and foreshores of Catalonia could be affected. “These areas could accumulate some 80-100 mm of water during the event, or even locally more than 200 mm.”

Heavy and persistent rain could also affect parts of the Murcia region of the Cantabrian Sea until Saturday November 16 before it loses intensity during the day.
