Streaming is losing momentum in Switzerland

The sector seemed untouchable, as it has continued to gain ground in recent years. And yet, in 2023, movie views via streaming services declined compared to the previous year. A first since the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) collected detailed data on the issue, i.e. 2019, he announced this Friday.

Overall, films consumed in streaming were around 5% fewer in 2023. “This trend particularly affects documentaries (-8%) as well as European films (-9%),” notes the OFS. Swiss cinema, however, has reason to rejoice, as it grew by 13%. The market share of Swiss films nevertheless remains less than 1%, far behind American productions, which hold a virtual monopoly with 71%.

Rather surprisingly, the rental and purchase of films on video on demand have not suffered the same fate as streaming. As for rentals, the figures have stagnated since 2021, with some 4.3 million films rented per year. Purchases increased by 8%, after three years of successive declines, to reach around 941,000 sales.
