On Wednesday, an act of bravery marked the peaceful island of Reunion. On vacation in Saint-Pierre, a Belgian police officer, Mickey Merola, originally from Fléron, became the hero of the day by saving a little girl from drowning. The 37-year-old man, who was enjoying a moment of relaxation by the swimming pool at his hotel with his wife, reacted quickly and calmly to a critical situation.
Mickey Merola was resting by the pool at his hotel in Saint-Pierre on Wednesday morning with his wife when he saw the little girl drowning. The little girl had lost her glasses, tried to retrieve them from the bottom of the pool and found herself in difficulty.
The 37-year-old police officer did not hesitate for long, and he threw himself into the water to rescue her.
The victim, barely 5 years old, was no longer breathing. And Mickey had to perform CPR. After more than 2 minutes, the little girl finally regained consciousness.
The police officer, originally from Fléron, recounts the facts on his Facebook page. “I am proud to have been able, thanks to my work, to save this little girl from drowning”he writes. Transported to hospital, the child is out of danger. Mickey recalls a difficult experience that he nevertheless wanted to share.
He says he is proud today to be a Belgian police officer “and especially from Liège”, he concludes.
