On the night of November 3 to 4, 2024, the wildlife-nature police force carried out “a regulation operation which allowed the shooting of a second wolf within the perimeter of the Mont-Tendre pack”, explains the canton of Vaud on its website.
This shooting was carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and the cantonal decision of October 18, 2024. Unfortunately, this wolf has not been found to date despite several blood searches. conducted the next day, with the help of specialized dog handlers (red dogs).
The Directorate General for the Environment therefore calls on inspectors and forest guards, hunters, wildlife managers from neighboring French departments to report any observation of a wolf injured or found dead in the region. Mont Tendre is located about fifteen kilometers as the crow flies from the French Jura and Bois d'Amont.
The Mont Tendre pack was made up of 7 wolves before the canton's decision to eliminate it. A young wolf was already killed on the night of October 14 to 15, the animal was born during the year. The town in which she was killed was not specified.
The shootings of the Mont Tendre pack can take place until January 31, 2025, to the great dismay of nature protection associations.
A petition against the culling of the Mont Tendre pack has already collected more than 34,000 signatures as of November 7, 2024.
In the French sector of the Jura massif, three wolves have already been killed since the start of 2024 after attacks on herds of cattle.
A possible new wolf attack occurred in the town of Hôpitaux-Vieux (Doubs) on the night of November 5 to 6. A 200 kilo heifer was attacked.
