Relief in the Plouisy region, in Côtes-d'Armor. The Norwegian company Smart Salmon abandons its factory farm project.
According to the Breton prefecture, “Thursday October 31, 2024, Smart Salmon France informed the State services that the company was withdrawing its environmental authorization application file for the construction and operation of a salmon production and processing unit in the commune from Plouisy“.
The project was rejected by the population and elected officials of the territory due to risks for the environment, biodiversity and water quality, as well as for its energy consumption.
A victory for Welfarm and the local groups opposing this hyper-intensive farming project, which provided for an annual production of 8,000 tonnes of salmon raised on land in overcrowded ponds.

The Eau et Rivières de Bretagne association also reacted “Le Trieux escapes the worst, she wrote in her press release. Unable to respond to requests for supplements required by the Prefecture, the Norwegian company threw in the towel. She realized the obvious: the project was incompatible with the protection of Trieux and the territory was incapable of providing the 600 m³ of water per day necessary for the breeding and the salmon processing plant. . Many organizations mobilized to block this crazy project.”
“We welcome the abandonment of this project, but remain fully mobilized alongside other associations in order to obtain a moratorium against these intensive breeding operations.“, assures Lauriane Charles, campaign and legal affairs manager at Welfarm.
Indeed, in April 2024, Welfarm launched its “RAS: Everything to report” campaign, which opposes the installation in France of three very large, hyper-intensive Atlantic salmon farming projects, including that of Smart Salmon in Plouisy.
