Near Fougères (Ille-et-Vilaine), the Smictom Valcobreizh will renew the collection of shells in its recycling centers, “facing the success of the two experiments carried out since 2022”.

21 tonnes collected last year

In 2022, in just one month, on four recycling center (Combourg, Liffré, Melesse and Tinténiac), Smictom had collected more than three tons of shells. The operation was rolled out in 2023 in all Smictom recycling centers. Over five months, from November 2023 to March 2024, users had deposited twenty-one tons of shells.

This year, users are therefore guests to deposit their empty shells, from November 2 to March 31, 2025, on the seven recycling centers of the territory (Combourg, Melesse, -sur-Ille, La Bouëxière, Liffré, Saint-Aubin d'Aubigné and Tinténiac). “In the majority recycling centers, the shells will be thrown on the platform green waste in an identified area. For others, specific bins will be made available to place the shells,” describes Valcobreizh.

How does it work?

Users can place the shells there Saint-Jacquesoysters, mussels, whelks, periwinkles, cockles, clams… crustaceans are not typos, so they are not acceptedas well as shrimp, langoustines, crab shells and claws, as well as other waste such as finger rinselemons, napkins and others.

Smictom goes further: “Very rich in limestonethe shells are excellent as amendment for the earth. For questions hygienizationthey will be crushed with green waste then transformed into compost. Collecting them separately also allows users to reduce the weight of their trash can and spare yourself the smells while waiting for the next collection household waste”.
