The criminals place traps to avoid the intervention of the gendarmes

On the night of Saturday October 19 to Sunday October 20, 2024, a gendarmerie patrol responding to an attempted burglary in Aÿ-Champagne, in , was stopped in its progress by cleverly placed traps on the road.

The criminals had carefully prepared their attack by distributing caltrops, small pointed metal pieces designed to pierce vehicle tires. As reported by L’Union, the PSIG (Gendarmerie Surveillance and Intervention Platoon), en route to a hangar where an attempted break-in had been reported, saw its vehicle immobilized because of these devices, shortly before 2 a.m.

Despite this obstacle, reinforcements from the Aÿ brigade were quickly dispatched to secure the area. Fortunately, the burglars, despite their preparation, did not manage to take any loot. An investigation is nevertheless opened to identify the authors of this aborted attempt.

In addition to the police, two motorists were also victims of these formidable traps, puncturing their tires on the traps. As the regional daily explains, if the material damage is to be deplored, the incident could have had much more serious consequences, particularly if a vital emergency intervention had been delayed.
