The town hall of this town adds “secularism” to the French national motto

It’s a change that’s impossible to miss when you go to the town hall of the town of Eyjeaux, 13 kilometers southeast of (Haute-). Indeed, as pointed out The Popular of the Centerthe word “Secularism” has come here to join the national motto.

“Liberty – Equality – Fraternity – Secularism” is proudly displayed on the wall of the establishment in brown steel letters. The term “Secularism” has been slightly shifted so that it does not distort the Republican motto, which would be illegal.

An idea from the mayor

For the mayor, it all started during the election period. A resident points out to him that the Republican motto does not appear on the town hall and that he will only vote when this is the case. The mayor, who had not paid attention to this detail, therefore decided to correct this oversight and add the term “secularism” which he considered important because it allowed the other values to be linked.

An approach which, according to the mayor, has no anti-religion aim, but which on the contrary allows for living together where everyone is free to express their opinions and ideas with respect. It remains to be seen whether all this is indeed authorized since no text ensures the legality of this initiative.
