: Early wines in the turmoil of viticultural challenges

Like every year, the month of October heralds the arrival of early wines, a festive and convivial moment which this time takes place under the weight of tensions and disappointments.

The third Thursday in October marks the release of primeur wines, an event of great importance in the , where viticulture is at the heart of the local identity.

Between festivity and dismay

In Nîmes Métropole, young farmers from Gard, accompanied by elected officials, presented the grape varieties for 2024.
In a tense atmosphere, marked by a persistent crisis, the desire to make this event joyful and friendly was very present.
The year 2024 was particularly difficult for farmers, and Gard winegrowers suffered more. The future looks uncertain and tumultuous.

“You are part of our identity, our culture, and more generally of ,” emphasizes Franck Proust.

Elected officials call for supporting local producers, at all costs.
Climatic hazards, drop in production, increase in costs: the problems accumulate and weigh on the morale of these families who work “tirelessly”.
As a sign of discontent, the young farmers of Gard wore a black scarf to represent their dismay.
Other actions are also being carried out, such as tearing down signs outside towns.

A vintage to match

Despite repeated crises and a reduced quantity, the quality of early wines remains intact.
For this year, the red wine promises to be fruity, fresh and “very pleasant on the palate”. As for white, which is quite rare, we will move towards citrus notes.
Both varietals are designed to be easy to drink and consume quickly.
As the holidays approach, Romain Angelras, president of the young farmers of Gard, would like to point out that it is important to turn to local cellars and estates.
