Attack on a nurse in northern Quebec

A nurse working in the Cree village of Whapmagoostui in northern Quebec was violently attacked by a man who broke into her home on October 12.

The man entered his victim’s house through the patio door around 5:15 a.m., writes the Eeyou Eenou Police Department in a press release published on social networks. The man, who was wearing a kangaroo sweater according to the police description, stole personal belongings from the nurse in addition to violently hitting her in the head, including using a rock.

“Our priority at the moment is the support offered to all 70 employees of the Community Miyupimaatisiiun Center of Whapmagoostui affected by the event,” indicates by email the director of communications of the Cree Council of Health and Social Services of the Bay James, Marie-Claude Roussin. The establishment says it is “focusing its efforts on supporting and ensuring the well-being” of staff. “While we recognize the importance of being transparent, we believe it is not appropriate to provide further comments or details at this time, while an investigation is ongoing. Our leaders are aware of the situation and are committed to evaluating the measures to be put in place in the short and long term to prevent such a situation from happening again,” adds Ms.me Roussin.

The Union of Healthcare Professionals of Eeyou Istchee did not wish to comment on the situation since “an investigation is underway”.

The Eeyou Eenou Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the man involved in this crime. The village of Whapmagoostui has just over 1,000 inhabitants according to the municipal register of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. The only Cree village in Nunavik, it neighbors the Inuit village of Kuujjuarapik, which has more than 730 inhabitants.
