the Podensac slum deserted, Roma families have since settled in Saint-Michel-de-Rieufret

The Convergence Garonne community of communes (CdC), owner of the land, had alerted the public authorities. The conditions were unsanitary: no water point, makeshift constructions amid mounds of waste and car wrecks.

On the advice of sub-prefect Vincent Ferrier, the CdC initiated rental eviction proceedings with the administrative court. Before the judge’s decision, which was due to be handed down on October 28, the families left the camp on Monday afternoon. “They left of their own free will and I thank them,” notes the mayor of Podensac Bernard Mateille.

The Travelers reception area project

“We must have no illusions. We know that these populations do not fit into a normalization scheme and are moving to other areas in ,” notes the sub-prefect of Langon. Some of the families would have settled in Saint-Michel-de-Rieufret, on a plot of land close to the A62. “We have notified the authorities and the highways of the south of (ASF, subsidiary of Vinci Autoroutes), owner of the land,” confirms Mayor Jean-Bernard Papin.

To date, Convergence Garonne is not in compliance with the departmental plan which prescribes the creation of two reception areas for Travelers on its territory. The land on which the shanty town was located had been purchased by the community for this purpose. “This project, for which there will be state funding, must move forward,” insists the state representative. We need to get down to business to offer quality development to these populations who lack reception spaces. »
