Controversy in Verviers: anti-Semitic comments from a municipal candidate resurface

CThis publication advocating Nazism was in fact published last February but resurfaced, a few days before the municipal elections. “H!” “I saw clearly” the PS-IC candidate in the municipal elections in Verviers then wrote on his Facebook account. Content which was then deleted but which had nevertheless been recorded by several Internet users.

The information was confirmed and relayed by the two local media, The Meuse Verviers et the Future Verviers. Contacted by the first, Valérie Dejardin, federal president of the PS for the district of Verviers, assured that she did not “endorse this type of behavior” and that Municipal Interests “will communicate quickly” on this matter.

Such comments, prohibited by law and therefore criminally punishable, have sparked heated controversy as the timing of their return to social networks is close to the municipal elections this weekend.

The candidate is one of the opening candidates of the PS-IC group (he is therefore not affiliated with the PS), who immediately distanced himself from the man, explaining that such remarks are “in absolute opposition to the fundamental democratic principles and the cardinal values that our party defends,” reports the Future Verviers. The group then announced the candidate’s decision to withdraw from the campaign.
