A man shot dead in a Belgian hospital: his relatives file a complaint

LRelatives of the man shot dead by police in mid-September at the AZ Sint-Blasius hospital in Dendermonde have filed a complaint against the officer responsible for the fatal shooting. A 48-year-old man from Berlare was shot dead following an attack on police officers.

The incident took place on the night of September 13 to 14. This occurred “following a direct attack against the police forces,” the prosecution indicated, adding the next day that the man killed had a psychological history.

An investigation was opened and the prosecution, the laboratory, the forensic doctor and a weapons expert went to the scene. A judicial investigation is underway.

Another investigation, into unintentional battery resulting in death, is looking into the behavior of the police during this incident and is being carried out by Committee P. The officer who fired is part of the Berlare local police area -Zealous. The prosecution could not confirm the number of shots fired or whether the man was handcuffed at the time of the incident.

“The victim had suffered from psychosis for years and the police knew that there was a risk of escalation,” underlines the lawyer for the relatives of the man killed, Kristiaan Vandenbussche. “The use of violence by the police was clearly disproportionate. This is clearly murder: draw the gun, aim, pull the trigger and the bullet in the heart. » The lawyer opposes a classification of the facts as manslaughter.
