Citizens plan the future of the MRC Haute-Yamaska

This is the task that around sixty citizens tackled on Wednesday during a consultation aimed at reforming the Territorial Planning and Development Plan, a document specific to all MRCs which will define the orientations for the next 20 years.

“Today, the MRCs are called upon to play a role at all levels,” explains prefect Paul Sarrazin in an interview. This is how I see my territory for the coming years.”

Grouped by tables, participants of all ages embraced six themes: the environment, housing and habitation, mobility and transport, agriculture, community services as well as heritage and landscape.

Paul Sarrazin gives climate change as an example.

“Are current infrastructures resilient enough? Are we going far enough with retention basins? From now on, when we make a path, we must ensure that it is properly sized to respond to climate change.”

Realities

Wednesday’s exercise will be followed by other consultations which will allow the MRC, within two years, to submit an updated document.

Around 200 people also responded to an online survey regarding their concerns about the territory.

“The MRC’s planning and development plan must remain up to date to properly reflect the realities of the territory, at the socio-economic, environmental and political levels,” said Mr. Sarrazin.

“This is the most important operation for an MRC.”
