”This meeting is part of a series that we have started to […] raise consumer awareness about energy saving and energy efficiency issues,” she said, speaking of the campaign currently being led by the Agency for Energy Economy and Management.

AEME seeks to reduce, through awareness, the energy consumption of households and other users, according to Ms. Ndiaye.

Energy consumption needs continue to increase depending on the country’s demographics and ambitions for development, economic growth and industrialization, she said.

This is why the Agency for the Economy and Energy Management is ensuring that “this equipment [disparaissent] of the national market,” assured its general director.

Momar Ndao, president of the Consumers Association of Senegal

Lawyer Massokhna Kane, president of SOS Consommateurs, proposed controlling the quality of household appliances in order to avoid those that are likely to cause an increase in consumption. ”Electronic waste is a real problem, because it is often materials […] enormously greedy in terms of energy consumption,” pointed out Mr. Kane.

In his opinion, control is all the more necessary as the devices often arrive in Senegal in containers that can escape state control.

The president of SOS consommateurs suggested that AEME extend its awareness campaign to other sources of energy, fuel for example.

”It’s extremely important. Just by changing the device or operating method, we can reduce our consumption by 20 to 30%,” underlined, for his part, the president of the Consumers’ Association of Senegal, Momar Ndao.
