Abortion law: the majority of Committed will vote for the extension to 18 weeks, but not during the training period

LThe Committed will maintain total freedom of vote and opinion on the issue of abortion. A majority of their representatives have indicated that they will vote in favor of the extension to 18 weeks, but not during the period of negotiations for the formation of the federal government, said Wednesday the president of the Engagés, Maxime Prévot.

Questioned by Bel-RTL, he returned to the words of Pope Francis on the subject of doctors who perform abortions: “The medical professions deserve respect, they are in no way hired killers,” said Mr. Prévot.

Do not disrupt negotiations

The president of the Engagés recalled that five parties in the potential Arizona coalition had decided not to vote on a text proposed by the opposition for the moment, “to avoid disrupting the government negotiations which are already complicated today and that the we must succeed in making it happen.” According to him, this is not specific to abortion. This concerns all opposition proposals because they “are intended to disrupt the negotiation”.

But according to him, the Committed “will have total freedom of vote and opinion on this question of abortion”, in accordance with the “clear line” of the movement on ethical questions. “…And the majority of them have told me that they will support extending the time limit for being able to have an abortion to 18 weeks… There are debates on the modalities linked to abortion, but there can never be have a debate on calling into question the very principle of abortion,” he insisted.
