the big winners out of 72 projects

An independent jury chaired by François Gagnon, general director of the École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS) from 2019 to 2024, was tasked by the Association of Consulting Engineering Firms (AFG) with choosing the winners. The quality of the engineering, the innovations developed and the benefits for society in terms of sustainable development were taken into consideration in the evaluation of the nominated projects. “The winning projects illustrate how Quebec consulting engineering is a vector of transformation in all spheres of society, including buildings, transportation, culture, energy, environment, water management and more,” said Bernard Bigras, president and CEO of the AFG.

Here are the winners:

The Visionary Prize: awarded to the WSP and AtkinsRéatis consortium for phase 3 of the Samuel-De Champlain promenade development project, in Quebec. Selected from among all the competing projects for its innovation, audacity or proactivity.

Excellence Awards in the 13 categories:

  • Building: Mécanique-Électrique BPA and the Outaouais Integrated Health and Social Services Center for the expansion of the Gatineau Hospital Center.
  • Building Structure: gbi and Les Industries Bonneville for the design of a modular multi-housing in Beloeil.
  • Environment: WSP and the Canadian Space Agency for a project to protect the extinction of North American right whales.
  • Geotechnics and materials engineering: Englobe and Hydro-Québec for the avalanche barrier project, snowfall prevention. The work was carried out on the roof of the Romaine-4 power station.
  • Project management: CIMA + and CPDQ Infra for the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) – Antenne Rive-Sud.
  • Industrial: AtkinsRéalis and the City of Quebec for the Organic Matter Biomethanization Center (CBMO). This center includes an innovative process treating food waste and municipal sludge.
  • Transportation infrastructure: Côté-Jean et Associés and the Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS) for the renovation of the Cégep de Sherbrooke station.
  • Urban infrastructure: Stantec and the City of Quebec for the redevelopment of Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, a gathering place where works of historical commemoration and entertainment coexist.
  • International: Tetra Tech and Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) for optimal and environmental control of urban drainage in Louisville (Kentucky).
  • Mentor of the year in consulting engineering: Roland Charneux, eng., from Pageau Morel. Mr. Charneux inspired several generations of engineers through his convictions and his leadership.
  • SME consulting engineering: Latéral Conseil and Agora des Arts for the Agora des Arts in Rouyn-Noranda, a performance hall of international caliber. Reporting to consulting engineering: Laurie Juneau-Paradis, eng., of CIMA + in collaboration with the Cree Nation government for residential expansion (phase 1) and connection of a new well in Whapmagoostui.
  • Technology: CIMA + and the City of Trois-Rivières for the pre-emption software solution for fire safety.
