Franklin’s track could carry the storm into Canada. Forecast.
Franklin lands
Tropical Storm Franklin hit the island of Hispaniola, mostly in the Dominican Republic with sustained winds of 65 km/h. It is not so much the gusts that are likely to cause damage, but the rain. In some areas, up to 400 mm of rain could fall. On the side of Haiti, up to 200 mm are anticipated. The slow moving storm could cause flooding, flash flooding and landslides.
route drawn
During the next few days, Franklin would continue its course towards the northeast. Forecasters from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) estimate that the storm could eventually turn northwest to approach the American coast. The current positioning of the Bermuda High would force the storm to alter its course in that direction.
Trajectory to be determined
As Franklin continues his journey in the Atlantic, he should gain in intensity. Indeed, forecasters say it would reach category 2 with stronger winds. The atmospheric context at the beginning of next week should determine the path of the storm. A large trough is expected to move over Quebec as the cyclone approaches the coast. The speed at which he settles would be important: if done quickly, Franklin could be pushed out to sea. Otherwise, the storm could hit the Atlantic provinces, including Newfoundland. The evolution of the situation will therefore be to be monitored over the next few days.
