Hit by a truck driver who fled after the collision, a father and a mother were ejected from their vehicle in front of their three children, Wednesday evening, near Saint-Hyacinthe.

The tragedy occurred around 9:15 p.m. at the corner of 5e Avenue and rang Saint-Augustin, in Sainte-Hélène-de-Bagot.

According to the authorities, a truck driver never made his mandatory stop at the intersection, violently hitting a minivan on board which was a small family of five.

Under the force of the impact, the 29-year-old driver and his 27-year-old spouse were both ejected from the vehicle, while the trucker never stopped to help them, preferring to continue on his way.

The mother-of-one was taken to hospital in critical condition and doctors still feared for her life on Thursday morning, the day after the collision.

As for the father, he suffered serious injuries that are not life-threatening.

The three children were slightly injured.

A vast search operation was carried out in the area, and the offending trucker was quickly located about ten kilometers away, while traveling on Highway 20, in the Saint-Eugène-de-Grantham sector.

The police then arrested him.

The suspect, a 21-year-old young man, was scheduled to appear Thursday afternoon at the Saint-Hyacinthe courthouse, on charges of hit and run causing injury and dangerous driving causing injury.
