In a two-page letter sent to the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Timmins–James Bay MP Charlie Angus expresses his concerns after Elon Musk’s recent criticism of Canadian politics.

-

“Recently, Mr. Musk has turned his attention to Canadian political affairs, praising the current leader of the Conservative Party, aligning himself with Canadian far-right influencers and their platforms, and criticizing the Prime Minister current,” he wrote in his letter.

Mr. Angus argues that because of “X’s great power, any overt effort by Mr. Musk to support a particular party or leader could easily impact our electoral integrity.”

“The lack of content moderation on X, the ease with which misinformation is spread, and the threat of foreign interference create a substantial and serious concern,” adds the Ontario MP.

The NDP MP asks that Elections Canada insist that, during the next federal election, Elon Musk commit to algorithm transparency “so that election observers can see if his platform interferes with the promotion or removal of political content” .
