Short track speed skating: Sherbrooke residents stand out at the Canada Cup

Sherbrooke skaters stood out during the Canada Cup of short track speed skating which was held this weekend at the Eugène-Lalonde arena in Sherbrooke. Kim Boutin and Félix Roussel finished on the second step of the podium in their respective general classification.

The event was presented in Sherbrooke for a second consecutive year.

For Kim Boutin, it’s three gold medals over the weekend. She won both 500 meter finals as well as the second 1000 meter final.

The Sherbrookoise finished the first final with a time of 42.790 s. She also won the second 500-meter final with a time of 42.867 seconds.

Overall, Kim Boutin amassed 17,048 points, just behind New Brunswicker Courtney Sarault.

Kim Boutin feels ready for the second half of the season. Last year, I went to school more so to see I wanted to get back on good physical foundations. The 500 meters I wanted to go for it and I possibly found my place for the 1000 meters by winning the last distance. I’m excited for the rest of the seasonshe assures.

Sherbrooke Ann-Sophie Bachand, who also took part in this round with Kim Boutin, took third place with a time of 43.629 s. She finished second in Final 2 of the 1500 meters.

In the general ranking, Bachand took fifth place with a total of 10,478 points.

As for Myriam Djouaher, she concluded the competition in 14th place.

Among the men, Félix Roussel had success in the 1000 meter finals. He won both finals with respective times of 1:25.150 s and 1:24.310 s.

Roussel concluded the competition with 15,248 points. Skater Jordan Pierre-Gilles finished the Canada Cup in fifth place in the general men’s ranking.

For one last time at home?

Kim Boutin has made known her intentions to hang up her skates after the next Olympic Games which will take place in Italy, in Milan-Cortina in 2026. She is thinking about her post-career and it was therefore potentially her last competition at the arena from Sherbrooke this weekend.

Kim Boutin is delighted with the reception received, particularly from young supporters who see the skater as a true inspiration.
