Who are the candidates to succeed Justin Trudeau?

This is the number of candidates who came forward to become leader of the Liberal Party of Canada (PLC) before the deadline of January 23 at 5 p.m. This number could, however, change, as the candidacies must be officially confirmed by the LPC and by Elections Canada within 10 days.

They are considered the favorites for the race. To date, more than forty Liberal elected officials have supported the former governor of the Bank of Canada, compared to around 25 for the former Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister.

The other 5 candidates:
- Karina Gould : Member of Parliament for Burlington (Ontario), leader of the government in the Commons, the former minister is the youngest candidate (37 years old).
- Jaime Battiste : MP for Sydney—Victoria (Nova Scotia), he is the first Mi’kmaw MP to sit in Parliament.
- Chandra Arya : MP for Nepean (Ontario), unilingual English-speaking, he created controversy by declaring that French is not a priority for Quebecers.
- Frank Baylis : former member of Parliament for Pierrefonds–Dollard (Quebec), the businessman is the first to announce his candidacy.
- Ruby Dalla : Member of Parliament for Brampton–Springdale (Ontario) from 2004 to 2011, she was one of the first women of Indian origin elected to Ottawa.

Next Monday is the deadline to register with the PLC so you can vote to elect leader on March 9.

“Orphan” constituencies courted
Between now and Monday, the candidates’ organizations will be working to register new activists. All constituencies in the country have equal weight in the choice of leader. The campaigns therefore particularly target constituencies which are not held by the PLC, because as they often have fewer registered activists, they are easier to capture for one camp or the other.
