The famous sparkling drink, emblematic of the sectors going from Montmirail to Sézanne and widely cultivated in the South-West of Marne, has seen its shipments drop significantly.

A marked decline in all markets
In 2024, the French marketrepresented 118.2 million bottles either a decline of 7,2 %compared to 2023. The internal market is still under tension due to “the prevailing political and economic gloom. »
Exports, for their part, are experiencing an even greater decline. They amount to 153.2 million bottles marking a drop of 10.8% compared to 2023.
However, the share of exports, i.e. 56,4 % in total, remains significantly higher on the national market, thus confirming the reversal observed in recent years.

Maxime Toubart, president of the General Union of Winegrowers and co-president of the Champagne Committee, is hardly optimistic.
According to him, “champagne is a real barometerof the consumer state of mind. » He adds: “It is not time for celebration, between inflation, global conflicts, economic uncertainties and political wait-and-see attitude in some of the largest champagne markets, such as France or the United States. »
A vision focused on the future
For David Chatillon, president of the Union of Champagne Houses and co-president of the Champagne Committee, “it is in less favorable periods that we must prepare for the future ».
He calls for maintain environmental effortsto conquer new markets and to reach new consumers. “Champagne is a solid and sustainable organizational model, which has proven itself even in adversity, and this gives us confidence for the future,” he concludes.
