It does not seem completely unreasonable to estimate that if Switzerland were to have a 27th canton, it could be the municipality of Zurich. With 450,000 inhabitants, its population exceeds that of the 20 least populated cantons in the country. Its surface area, 92 km², is almost three times larger than that of Basel-City. While with more than 30,000 civil servants, it is one of the largest employers in the country. Which has a significant cost. Budget 2025: 11.2 billion francs. More than the State of Geneva.
