The Atlas comet visible in the sky of Reunion Island: it only passes every 160,000 years!
For several days, it has been possible to observe comet Atlas (C/2024 G3) from the sky over Reunion Island. It is observable early in the evening (around 8:00 p.m.) towards the west/southwest.
According to Jean-Marie Bolle, Astronomy presenter:
“Discovered on April 5, 2024 from Chile, comet C/2024 G3 Atlas passed closest to the Sun on January 13, 2025 at a distance of approximately 13.5 million kilometers. Its magnitude increased to – 3.5 , potentially more (The magnitude remains difficult to estimate due to the proximity of the Sun. This comet is located in a very long orbit. You can see it in the early evening (around). 8:00 p.m.) heading west/southwest.”
-If you have good binoculars, hurry up, they won't come back for 160,000 years!
