Arrival of the Lioness ZIA
Since the summer of 2022, the Zoo des Sables-d'Olonne is pleased to welcome a new lioness to its park.
From the Parc des félins – a zoo in Seine-et-Marne – ZIA now keeps the male company BAGIR !

When he was two years old, BAQIR arrived at Zoo des Sables d'Olonne at the end of 2019.
From the Plzen Zoo in the Czech Republic, he is a direct descendant of the famous Atlas lions of the Royal Menagerie of Rabat (Morocco).
This species is unfortunately extinct today in the wild because it was exterminated by humans at the beginning of the last century. The last wild specimen was shot in 1922.
The “subspecies” of Atlas lions – Panthera leo leo –, with a very large size and an abundant, particularly dark mane reaching down to the bottom of the belly, was undoubtedly the noblest of all.
And there are only a few individuals of Atlas Lions who survive in captivity: some zoological parks in the world are trying to conserve it, such as the zoos of Plzen or Brno in the Czech Republic, of Port Lympne in the United Kingdom and in France, the Ecozoo des Sables and the Lyon zoo.
Birth of 5 bush dogs
They were born on August 6, 2022.
Very recently released from their burrow, these small dogs (3 females and 2 males) still spend a large part of their day sleeping. Although timid, they venture outside their nest for a few minutes in the afternoon. We can then observe them following their parents very closely.
The zoo team is very happy to see these little ones flourishing because it is the first time since the arrival of the species in 2016 that a litter has been raised to this age.
Although protected in many countries, bush dog populations are declining due to habitat destruction.
Classified as “near-threatened” by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), this species is the subject of a European Program for Threatened Species in which Zoo des Sables actively participates.
Birth of 2 Caribbean flamingos
Two Caribbean flamingos were born on July 26 and 29, 2022.
Their parents having abandoned their nests as soon as they were born, the zoo's animal keepers took over to take care of them. From now on, they are visible in the flamingo aviary and spend the day near the adults in order to be reintroduced into the group soon.
