The Ministry of the Interior and Public Security of Senegal is actively preparing the ninth annual edition of National Cleanup Day, scheduled for February 1, 2025. This event aims to mobilize the population around a collective sanitation effort and public security, according to an official source relayed by the Senegalese Press Agency (APS).

Placed under the theme “Setal sunu gox mooy yokk sunu kaaraangué” which means “Making our environment clean means promoting safety”, this second edition of the year will include several awareness campaigns. Among them, a mass campaign to obtain the National Identity Card, which will be held from January 29 to 31, has been announced. The sites of this campaign include the Place du 3e millennium in Dakar, Place in Thiès and Dianatou in Touba (Mbacké), according to the ministry.

In addition to preparations for the clean-up day, a major campaign is planned to facilitate the issuance of passports, although the modalities and locations of enlistment are still being worked out. The period from January 29 to 31 will also be marked by blood donation days and free medical consultations which will take place in the infirmaries of the Fire Brigade and the National Police across the country.

The ministry intends to take advantage of this citizens’ day to raise massive awareness about first aid, the fight against irregular emigration, and uncivil behavior. Activities to promote the doctrine of community policing, collaborative governance and support for the registration of two-wheelers will also be carried out to encourage broad community participation.

Regarding the cleaning activities themselves, the presidency will still have to validate the sites where President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko will be present. According to the APS source, administrative authorities have already identified an extensive list of potential sites throughout the territory, including the 14 regions, 47 departments and 127 districts. The key locations to date concern cemeteries, places of worship, public spaces, markets, and train stations, it is specified.

The secretary general of the ministry, Cheikh Niang, heads a central steering committee responsible for coordinating activities, while a decentralized committee brings together governors, prefects and sub-prefects to ensure effective deployment. This preparation reflects a significant national effort to strengthen active citizenship and community engagement, underlines the document consulted by the APS.
