Morocco prevented 78,685 attempts at irregular migration and dismantled 332 human trafficking networks in 2024, according to a press release from the Interior Ministry. These figures reveal the effectiveness of the control mechanisms deployed by Rabat, particularly on its land and maritime borders in an increasingly unstable regional context.
According to the same source, 58% of illegal migrants intercepted came from West Africa, 12% from Maghreb countries and 9% from central and eastern Africa. Among the most notable operations, 14 attempts to collectively cross the Sebta and Melilla fences were recorded, involving more than 4,290 people.
On the humanitarian side, Moroccan efforts also resulted in the rescue of 18,645 migrants at sea. They benefited from medical assistance, accommodation and social support. In addition, some 6,135 migrants were voluntarily repatriated to their country of origin, in coordination with their diplomatic representations.
The ministry emphasizes that criminal networks are continually improving their methods, which requires increased vigilance. These efforts demonstrate Morocco’s commitment to regional security and the fight against cross-border trafficking. They also reflect the official desire to contribute to a united and concerted management of migration challenges with its international partners.
