Safety of cyclists in Saskatoon questioned

This tragic incident revives discussions about the safety of cyclists in the City of Bridges.

Cyclist Éric Lefol believes that a good infrastructure must be put in place where cyclists feel protected and can circulate safely.

A quote from Éric Lefol, cyclist

He says he deplores the behavior of certain motorists who pass too close to cyclists by accelerating their motor.

A member of the group’s board of directors Saskatoon Cycleswho advocates for safe cycling in Saskatoon, says he’s had some crashes at the intersection where the woman died.

These accidents could have been avoided if the necessary measures had been taken upstream, says James Arnold.

We are simply in a situation where we are vulnerable when we move around surrounded by cars and heavy trucks. We don’t know the details, but it’s a tragedy that someone died. This is very serioussays Arnold.

In a press release, the police authorities of Saskatoon specify that in 2022, a total number of 29 collisions involving cyclists were recorded, without any death being to be deplored.

Since the start of 2023, a total of six collisions involving cyclists have been recorded, one of which resulted in a death, that of Wednesday, note the police.

For their part, members of the city council of the City of Saskatoon have expressed their intention to await the conclusions of the investigation by law enforcement before commenting on the accident.
