The Paris Stock Exchange is moving in the green on Wednesday, on a market optimistically assessing Trump's latest announcements in terms of customs duties and investment in artificial intelligence.

The CAC 40 gained 0.53% to 7,811.42 points around 8:50 GMT, an increase of 40.47 points. The day before, the Parisian flagship index had gained 0.48%.

“Customs duties made the headlines again last night, after new comments from Donald Trump with threats to China,” note Deutsche Bank economists.

Questioned by the press at the White House, Mr. Trump assured Tuesday that his government was discussing “10% customs duties on Chinese products because they send fentanyl to Mexico and Canada”, which is ultimately consumed in the States. -United.

Originally an analgesic approved by the US administration, fentanyl is a synthetic drug 100 times more powerful than morphine and 50 times more powerful than cocaine, according to the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).

“It’s probably February 1, that’s the date we’re looking at,” he added, which corresponds to the date announced the day before for the application of 25% customs duties on Mexican and Canadian products.

These announcements have caused, for the moment, a little relief in Europe.

This “would suggest that the new administration will adopt a progressive rather than aggressive approach, the figure of 60% was initially mentioned”, estimated John Plassard, investment specialist for Mirabaud.

Another announcement scrutinized by the markets on Wednesday: Donald Trump declared that he wanted to implement a new artificial intelligence (AI) project, called “Stargate”, including investments of “at least 500 billion dollars” in AI infrastructures in the UNITED STATES.

On the bond side, the interest rates on the French ten-year loan reached 3.23%, compared to 3.27% the day before at closing. For its German equivalent, a benchmark in Europe, they fell to 2.48%, compared to 2.50% on Tuesday evening.

Alstom shares around 08:50 GMT lost 3.19% to 20.05 euros on the SBF 120.

The railway manufacturer recorded a turnover of 4.7 billion euros in the third quarter of its staggered 2024/2025 financial year, up 7.9% compared to last year, the group announced on Tuesday. But orders received are, however, down 22.2% compared to the third quarter of 2023/2024.
