She made her fifth start this year. Since 2020, the Dupont-de-l'Eure public school, in Neubourg (Eure), has hosted an outsourced teaching unit (UEE), which allowsow children followed by medico-social establishments to be educated in an ordinary environment. The UEEs were created to respond to “the new prerogatives of inclusion and to change mentalities”, specifies Clémence Pereira, reference educator.
At the Dupont-de-l'Eure school, six children aged six to twelve are welcomed. Every week, they follow twelve hours of schooling with a National Education teacher. The educators who supervise the children are employees of the DAME (medical-educational support system) West, the center of Adapei 27 which opened on November 12, 2024, in Neubourg. The association also rents the classroom at the Neubourg town hall.
Six children welcomed
Currently, only mornings are reserved for school learning. “For the teacher, six children each with a different levelit requires a lot of preparation work,” indicates Clémence Pereira.
In the afternoon, some students stay with Clémence Pereira to work on posture and behavior, while others join the different programs offered by the DAME: psychologist, psychomotor therapist, nurse… “We would like a second teacher to offer full days to children », Adds Sandrine Ferrand, director of the new DAME Ouest.
They need to understand what is expected of them and know what they will experience.
In the classroom, the entire layout has been designed for children, half of whom have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). “They need benchmarks, rituals, for example we created a very visual schedule with photos of the people present. They need to understand what is expected of them and to know what they will experience,” explains the educator.
In addition to the classic desks lined up facing the board, a corner of the class is dedicated to the TEACCH method, which allows you to work on the student's posture, learn to concentrate and know his left and his right. Another space is dedicated to learning autonomy through play. “In the morning, each child rotates through these three spaces,” explains Clémence Pereira.
-Finally, a final sector allows children to isolate themselves and relax, when necessary, “this is essential for managing emotions », Comments the educator.
I made a hundred friends!
For Kelly, 8 years old, there is no photo. “We learn the alphabet, French, math… I love this school! I made a hundred friends! Before I couldn’t go to recess…” she testifies. For his part, Aaron, 8 years old, “has made a lot of progress in two years. Before he was almost non-verbal », Reports the educator.
“Inclusion among other students allows us to work enormously on social bonds,” believes Clémence Pereira. The more it goes, the more they are included. We see that mentalities are changing among other children and families. »
A partnership with the college
During the school year, the goal of the UEE is to then work on inclusion in ordinary classes, “when we feel they are ready”, specifies the educator. Last year, two students were able to gradually integrate courses outside the UEE.
And then? “Afterwards, they come back to DAME,” reveals Sandrine Ferrand. For several years, the establishment has wanted to open a UEE within the Geneviève-de-Gaulle-Anthonioz college, with which it already exists a partnership allowing young people from DAME to eat in the canteen at lunchtime. “We have twelve young people waiting and we would like them to be able to continue their education there. We have not yet had the agreement of National Education, but we will work on it this year,” announces the director. The Dame Ouest du Neubourg takes care of 126 children and adolescents, aged 0 to 20 years old.
