Podor, January 21 (APS) – The president of the departmental association of okra producers of Podor, Silèye Thiène, mentioned several difficulties and obstacles to the development of the sector in this administrative district, located in the north of the country.
Among these difficulties, “we are experiencing major delays in the implementation of seeds, fertilizers and phytosanitary products. Access to financing is also a problem,” he said during an interview on Monday with the APS.
“These difficulties are disrupting our crop calendar,” he added.
Taking stock of the previous campaign, he indicated that 1000 hectares of okra fields had been developed in the various plots of the Podor department during the said campaign.
“Producers had recorded a yield of 16 tonnes per hectare,” he recalled.
Regarding the current campaign, Silèye Thiène indicated that three hectares have already been developed by producers.
-The producers of the Ngallenka boxes, an agricultural site straddling the communes of Ndiayène Pendao, Guédé Village and Fanaye, are in the process of harvesting, he said.
“The first harvests from okra fields covering 276 hectares are already on the market,” he said, specifying that “the price of a kilogram of okra is 900 CFA francs.”
“It’s an attractive price, if we know that we can harvest every two months,” estimated the okra producer.
